Mission: Realization of a map of the wireless signal coverage

Objective:

In order to check out if the network of Rescue is correct, we observed the signal around Cal IT² which is on the campus of Irvine and if other networks may be responsible for some interference on the network.

What were our tools:

To get information of network we have used two wireless cards:
  1. Cisco Aironet 350 series
  2. Centrino Duo T2300
We have used Network Stumbler which is a tool for Windows that allows you to detect Wireless Local Area Networks (WLANs) using 802.11b, 802.11a and 802.11g. If you want more information about this software, go to http://www.stumbler.net.

To get coordinate for each area, we used GPS Teletype with Ipaq.

How we worked:

We have taken a map of this place and we have divided it into several areas (about 53 areas). For each one, we registered information and we were interested in access point rather than in adhoc network.

About the network “rescue “, we observed different channels and we registered following information:
  1. The highest seen Signal value. (Signal +)
  2. The current Signal to Noise ratio, either in dB or arbitrary RSSI units. (SNR)
  3. The maximum reported bandwidth for the device (Speed)
  4. The Strengh signal and quality signal with Ipaq for one Channel
Moreover for each area, we wrote down all SSID which we saw with Network Stumbler.
